Poem-A-Day

It was my first date; however that does not mean i was totally inexperienced. I had kissed girls and they had finished me before. It was my first date because it was the first time i had seen a girl, set her as a goal, and followed through long enough to get to the next part At that point everything i knew about girls was in theory, and not sound theory. Adolescent theory. I knew enough that i should keep her interested and talkative. “When all else fails, let her speak. And keep her speaking, ” my brother had said. “When she stops talking you are either in a very good spot or a very bad.” So I let her talk. Through the basketball game she talked. Through the milkshake she talked. In her kitchen she talked. Up the stairs she talked. Sitting on her bed we talked, until she had run out of yarn to spin. I know now that her silence was an invitation, but i didnt see it. She had posed herself to make it easy. Ever the pessimist, i took it to mean that i had misplayed the entire evening. My thoughts spun out of control, thinking about all the ways i had said something off. I pushed the conversation forward. I left that night, angry, exposed, and alone.

His teeth clacked, but nothing he could do would change the cold. Shivering, he set his jaw, and stood. Pants, shirt, coat, door. Wind tried, but his first step came unstopped. It was followed by a second and the rest down the wall. It seemed, at least to him, that every turn, down the steps and into the yard, turned him to face the bitter wind. This was no dervish though. Just a painful reminder of who exactly rule this world, from the mother. Bright summer days were long ago spent. Even pretty autumn was on it’s way out. His mind screamed for bed and more than his mind ached for the warmth of his bed warmer, but those needs would wait. Business was at hand, and he did have a job to do.

She sat and chewed and smiled, a bit of lettuce held firm to mayonnaise under the corner of her mouth. Swallowed. Laughed at some nonsense he said. Smarmily he told her about the lettuce on her cheek and she tilted her head and invited him to lick it off. He dabbed it with a napkin.

A rain gutter’s gush;/
commonplace, expectorantly,/
violent, man-made,/
powerful, and tamed./
/
She smiles and digs her claws in,/
/
with the breath of a day reaking off her lips,/
trembly, into his shoulder./

Later, she sprays febreeze and exaltingly sighs/
blithely./

Shocking/ Train Derailment in Ohio
simply because no one had/
gotten injured from this incident/
& that the two people I had/ survived & was able to drive/

Love

Their ceramic lips /
kissed, shattered from his pressure,/
and leaked juice; lovely.

Place two commas

Fighting through the words /
he finished /
saying, “That’s why I eat eucharist only at funerals.”

His words painfully hanging /
in the air.
